The Indian Navy has recently transferred the decommissioned Landing Ship Tank (Medium) Ex INS Guldar to the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Limited (MTDC). This initiative marks a pioneering effort in India to convert a retired naval vessel into an underwater museum and artificial reef.
The project aims to promote marine conservation while creating opportunities for local communities. Ex INS Guldar, which served the Indian Navy for 39 years, will be scuttled to create an artificial reef that will support diverse marine life and provide shelter for thriving ecosystems. The initiative is expected to generate livelihood opportunities for coastal communities through underwater tourism. The project will also facilitate diving training for the Indian Navy at the scuttled site, enhancing the Navy's operational capabilities while promoting marine tourism in the region. India has seen the conversion of other naval vessels into museums, such as INS Kursura in Vishakhapatnam and INS Cuddalore, further contributing to the country's maritime heritage.
