भारत विश्व के उन देशों में शामिल है जो सबसे अधिक कच्चा पेट्रोलियम (Crude Petroleum) आयात करते हैं। देश की ऊर्जा-ज़रूरतें, उद्योगों और परिवहन-क्षेत्र की बढ़ती मांग के कारण भारत को अपने अधिकांश कच्चे तेल का आयात करना पड़ता है। नवीनतम रिपोर्टों के अनुसार भारत सबसे अधिक कच्चा तेल रूस से खरीदता है

भारत केवल कच्चा तेल आयात ही नहीं करता, बल्कि अपनी उन्नत रिफाइनरियों में उसे साफ (refine) करके पेट्रोल, डीज़ल, एटीएफ और अन्य पेट्रोलियम उत्पाद तैयार करता है। यही तैयार पेट्रोलियम उत्पाद भारत का सबसे बड़ा निर्यात भी हैं। भारत इन refined petroleum products को सबसे अधिक USA को निर्यात करता है। इस प्रकार भारत रूस से कच्चा तेल आयात करके उसे refine कर USA जैसे देशों को निर्यात करता है।

इस तरह भारत की ऊर्जा-अर्थव्यवस्था एक स्पष्ट संरचना बनाती है—
