Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is the 52nd Chief Justice of India, assuming office on 14 May 2025. Born in Maharashtra, he began his legal career in 1985, practicing constitutional and administrative law. He served as a judge in the Bombay High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019.
Justice Gavai is notable for being the first Buddhist and second Scheduled Caste judge to hold the position of CJI.
