◾️यह द्वीप बंगाल की खाड़ी के उत्तर-पूर्वी क्षेत्र में, बांग्लादेश और म्यांमार की सीमा के पास स्थित है। यह बांग्लादेश के कॉक्स बाज़ार-टेकनाफ़ प्रायद्वीप (Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula) के दक्षिणी सिरे से नौ किलोमीटर दूर है।
7.3 किलोमीटर लंबा यह द्वीप अधिकतर समतल है और समुद्र तल से 3.6 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित है। यह बांग्लादेश का एकमात्र प्रवाल द्वीप है और यह समुद्री कछुओं का प्रजनन स्थल भी है।
◾️इस द्वीप पर लगभग 10,000 लोगों की स्थायी आबादी है । चूंकि यह एक प्रमुख पर्यटक आकर्षण है, इसलिए हर दिन औसतन 10,000 पर्यटक यहां रुकते हैं।

कलकत्ता उच्च न्यायालय ने शुक्रवार को एक आदेश जारी कर दक्षिण 24-परगना जिला पुलिस को बंगाल विधानसभा में विपक्ष के नेता सुवेंदु अधिकारी को 10 मार्च को संदेशखली में नज़ात पुलिस स्टेशन के अधिकार क्षेत्र के तहत दक्षिण अकराटोला में एक बैठक आयोजित करने की अनुमति देने को कहा।
हालाँकि, न्यायमूर्ति जय सेनगुप्ता ने कहा कि अधिकारी को बैठक आयोजित करने की अनुमति दी जाएगी
या सुबह 10 बजे से शाम 5 बजे के बीच रैली।
न्यायाधीश ने आदेश पारित करते हुए कहा, “विपक्षी दल के नेता को कोई भी भड़काऊ बयान देने की अनुमति नहीं दी जाएगी जिससे क्षेत्र की कानून व्यवस्था की स्थिति खराब हो सकती है।”
संदेशखाली में अधिकारी की रैली उस दिन होगी जब सत्तारूढ़ तृणमूल कांग्रेस ब्रिगेड परेड ग्राउंड में अपनी जनार्जन रैली आयोजित करेगी, जहां, बंगाल की सत्तारूढ़ पार्टी के अनुसार, अशांत द्वीप से बड़ी संख्या में लोग आएंगे।
उच्च न्यायालय का आदेश अधिकारी की एक याचिका के बाद आया, जिसमें आरोप लगाया गया था
दक्षिण 24-परगना पुलिस ने अधिकारी को बैठक आयोजित करने से रोकने के लिए ही नज़ात पुलिस स्टेशन के अधिकार क्षेत्र में 144 सीआरपीसी लगाई थी।
अधिकारी की ओर से पेश हुए वकील ने कहा कि तृणमूल पदाधिकारियों को क्षेत्र में प्रवेश करने की अनुमति दी जा रही है, जबकि विपक्षी दलों के नेताओं को वहां जाने से रोका जा रहा है।
वकील ने कहा, “जब विपक्षी दल, विशेष रूप से मेरे मुवक्किल, पुलिस से संपर्क कर रहे हैं, तो वे कह रहे हैं कि उन्हें अनुमति नहीं दी जाएगी क्योंकि क्षेत्र अभी भी सीआरपीसी की धारा 144 के तहत है।”
राज्य सरकार के वकील ने आरोपों का विरोध किया और कहा कि प्रशासन क्षेत्र में और कानून-व्यवस्था की समस्या नहीं चाहता।
“सरकार बार-बार विपक्षी दलों को क्षेत्र में कोई भी राजनीतिक कार्यक्रम आयोजित करने से क्यों रोक रही है? सरकार किसे बचाना चाहती है, ”न्यायाधीश सेनगुप्ता ने आदेश जारी करने से पहले पूछा।
