Human history is rich with the stories of civilizations, their triumphs, and their knowledge. Much of this knowledge is passed down through written records. The brevity of most inscriptions (averaging only five signs), the absence of extensive bilingual texts, and the lack of a known descendant language contribute to its persistent status as an unidentified text. From the remote Pacific, the Rongorongo script of Easter Island offers yet another captivating puzzle. Carved on wooden tablets, these unique glyphs depict stylized human, animal, and plant forms. The islanders, known as the Rapa Nui, used this script, but its exact nature, origin, and relationship to the Rapa Nui language are hotly debated. Most of the knowledge of the script was lost following European contact and the decimation of the island's population. With only a few dozen surviving texts, and no surviving speakers who could read them, Rongorongo stands as a haunting symbol of lost knowledge and an enduring unidentified text.
