- Unified Platform
The Indian government has recently approved the 'One Nation One Subscription' (ONOS) scheme, which aims to enhance access to academic journals for higher education institutions across the country. The purpose of ONOS is to provide unified access to top national and international journals, targeting all government-run universities and colleges. The scheme has a substantial budget of ₹6,000 crore allocated for the next three years, ensuring sustained support for educational institutions. ONOS will offer subscriptions to approximately 13,000 journals from 30 major international publishers, covering a wide range of academic fields. Around 6,300 institutions, including government-run higher education and research institutions, will benefit from this initiative, which aims to level the playing field for institutions with limited resources. INFLIBNET, an independent center under the University Grants Commission (UGC), will manage all central payments to publishers and the ONOS platform. Institutions will have the flexibility to use their own funds for additional subscriptions outside the ONOS scheme. The ONOS platform is set to become operational on January 1, 2025, marking a significant milestone in improving research accessibility for higher education institutions in India.
