The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadri, are a mountain range that runs parallel to the western coast of the Indian Peninsula. They are one of the most important geographical and ecological regions of India and play a major role in the country's climate, water resources and biodiversity.
The Western Ghats extend for approximately 1,600 kilometres from the northern part of Maharashtra and Gujarat to southern Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The range passes through Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Geography
The Western Ghats form the eastern edge of the narrow coastal plain along the Arabian Sea. In several places, the mountains rise steeply from the surrounding plains. The range is not continuous throughout its entire length and is interrupted by several important passes and gaps.
The Palakkad Gap, located between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, is one of the most significant natural gaps in the mountain range. Other important passes have historically supported transportation and communication between the western and eastern parts of southern India.
The highest peak of the Western Ghats is Anamudi, located in Kerala, with an elevation of approximately 2,695 metres above sea level.
Biodiversity
The Western Ghats are recognized as one of the world's major biodiversity hotspots. The region contains a large number of endemic species, meaning species that are naturally found only in a particular geographical area.
Its forests provide habitat for several important species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and plants. The region is particularly significant for amphibian diversity and contains many species that are found nowhere else in the world.
Rivers and Water Resources
The Western Ghats are an important source of water for peninsular India. Several major rivers originate in or receive significant water from the region.
Important rivers associated with the Western Ghats include the Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri and Tungabhadra. These rivers support agriculture, drinking-water supplies, hydropower generation and ecosystems across several Indian states.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
A significant portion of the Western Ghats was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012 because of its outstanding biodiversity and ecological importance. The site includes a series of protected areas distributed across several states.
Environmental Importance
The Western Ghats influence the Indian monsoon by acting as a major barrier to moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea. The mountains receive substantial rainfall during the southwest monsoon, supporting forests, rivers and agricultural systems.
The region also helps regulate local and regional climate and contributes to carbon storage through its forests and ecosystems.
Conservation Challenges
Despite their ecological importance, the Western Ghats face several environmental pressures. These include deforestation, habitat fragmentation, mining, infrastructure development, urban expansion, tourism pressure and climate change.
To protect ecologically fragile areas, the Government of India has considered and proposed the designation of parts of the Western Ghats as Eco-Sensitive Areas (ESAs). Such measures aim to regulate environmentally damaging activities while allowing sustainable development and local livelihoods.
Importance for India
The Western Ghats are important not only for biodiversity but also for India's water security, agriculture, climate regulation and sustainable development. Protecting the region is therefore considered essential for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring the long-term availability of natural resources.
