According to the latest reports, there have been 107 new deaths and 3,160 new cases of mpox in Africa in just the past week. The Africa CDC and WHO have launched a continental response plan to address the crisis. JYNNEOS is a 2-dose vaccine developed to protect against mpox and smallpox. People need to get both doses of the vaccine for the best protection against mpox. The second dose should be given 4 weeks after the first dose.

“This first pre-qualification of a vaccine against mpox is an important step in our fight against the disease, both in the context of the current outbreaks in Africa, and in future,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. According to the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said last month that nearly 70 per cent of cases in Congo the country hardest hit by mpox are in children younger than 15, who also accounted for 85 per cent of deaths.
