The Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, widely known as BAPS, is a prominent global Hindu organization dedicated to fostering faith, community, and service. Rooted in ancient Hinduism, BAPS propagates the profound Akshar Purushottam philosophy, a distinct understanding within the Swaminarayan tradition. The leadership of BAPS has seen remarkable growth under successive spiritual leaders. After Shastriji Maharaj, the movement flourished under Yogiji Maharaj (1892-1971), who broadened its reach. His successor, Pramukh Swami Maharaj (1921-2016), oversaw unprecedented expansion, transforming BAPS into a truly global Hindu organization. Under his guidance, countless Hindu temples (or mandirs) were constructed across five continents, including iconic structures like the Swaminarayan Akshardham complexes and the groundbreaking London Mandir. Today, Mahant Swami Maharaj (born 1933) carries forward this profound legacy as the sixth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and the current guru of BAPS. He inspires devotees globally, emphasizing personal spirituality, family harmony, and community service. Core practices within BAPS revolve around daily worship, adherence to moral codes, and regular participation in satsang – spiritual assemblies involving bhajans (devotional songs), discourses, and discussions.
