Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is a constitutional body of the Government of India responsible for conducting recruitment examinations for various civil services and other central government posts. It was established on 1 October 1926 as the Public Service Commission under British India. Following the adoption of the Constitution of India on 26 January 1950, it became the Union Public Service Commission under Articles 315 to 323 of the Constitution. The commission is headquartered in New Delhi, India.
UPSC plays a vital role in ensuring a merit-based recruitment system for India's civil services. It conducts competitive examinations, advises the Government of India on matters relating to recruitment, promotions, transfers, disciplinary cases, and the framing of recruitment rules for various government services.
History
The origins of the Union Public Service Commission can be traced to the recommendations of the Lee Commission (1924), which proposed the establishment of an independent body to oversee civil service recruitment in British India. As a result, the Public Service Commission was established on 1 October 1926.
After India gained independence, the Constitution of India granted constitutional status to the commission. Since then, UPSC has functioned as an autonomous institution responsible for recruiting candidates to the country's highest civil services.
